Equine Myofascial Release

The goal of equine myofascial release is to restore fascia to a healthy state. Fascia is the connective tissue of the body, forming a three dimensional web from head to hoof and covering every muscle, bone, organ, tendon and ligament.

Fascial tissue should be soft, pliable and pain free. Unfortunately, this tissue is often damaged by the aging process, nervous tension, traumatic injury, repetitive or overuse injury, poor footing, overstretching, poor saddle fit and conformational defects. When damaged, the fascial system tightens as a protective response, therefore losing its pliability and resulting in a decrease of athletic performance and functional capacity.

Myofascial release uses specific, hands-on techniques to allow the fascia to realign in an appropriate pattern, allowing for maximum strength, coordination and power. Fascial stretching techniques are held for a minimum of 90-180 seconds, as studies have shown that histological change in the tissue does not occur until it has been stretched for three minutes.

Fascia can become restricted in any area of the body. Common restrictions are often identified due to specific riding disciplines, but patterns are not predictable. Therefore, during a myofascial release session, the equine body is treated as a whole.
